On city rain in the early morning

ON CITY RAIN IN THE EARLY MORNING

a city love-song –
gurgling puddles swish old shoes wet,
giggling schoolgirls nibble homework
on the bus,
misty office-windows drip last
night’s tears and laughs,
raindrops sing and melt and play
in people’s hair,
cars have running noses and blurp
and cough and feel the cold,
teeth and beggars and mist
and the Cape Times are
soggy wet and fresh like the rain.
hazy people smoke the rain
and dry away their troubles.
crisp sea-gulls sing and peck the
rain-falling
falling face-flat
into the people’s sparkling eyes.
